The National Library has made a significant impact on the students of Oscar Mpetha High School in Nyanga, Cape Town, by restoring their school library. This initiative has brought joy and excitement to the learners, who now have access to a well-equipped library that will aid them in their studies and research.

Teacher Vuyiseka Masekwana highlighted the importance of having someone to manage the library to prevent issues such as books being taken and not returned. The new library is set to improve the students’ grades and provide them with a conducive environment to work on their assignments.

Thanks to the efforts of Phakama Matoti, a project manager for the Children’s Literacy Programme, the school library has been revived with donations of essential items such as cupboards, computer tables, and computers. Additionally, libraries in Gugulethu and Nyanga contributed books to support the library, which caters to over 1,000 learners.

The impact of having a library goes beyond academic purposes, as Matoti emphasized that it will also encourage students to read and become better individuals. The Children’s Literacy Programme further promotes reading through book clubs in schools and communities, fostering a culture of literacy and learning.
