Remembering the Legacy of Bill Custers: A Community Television Icon

The passing of Bill Custers, a beloved figure in the world of community television in Hamilton, has left a void in the hearts of many. His long and successful career, spanning decades and multiple roles in the industry, has left a lasting impact on those who had the pleasure of working with him.

Starting his career in 1979 with Maclean Hunter Cable, Bill’s journey in the television industry took him to Astral Media (now Bell) where he played a pivotal role in developing pay-tv products, including pay-per-view wrestling. His influence in the Canadian pro wrestling scene was profound, yet he remained humble and behind the scenes, as Greg Oliver of Slam Wrestling noted in his tribute.

After facing a setback in 2011, Bill returned to Cable 14 in Hamilton, where he dedicated himself to transforming the channel into a community force. His passion for keeping the community informed and engaged was evident in his work, especially during the Covid crisis when he ensured that Cable 14 supported the broadcasting of City of Hamilton media briefings.

Bill’s retirement last fall marked the end of an era in his career, but his impact on the industry and the community will be felt for years to come. His dedication to Cable 14 and the team he worked with, as well as his commitment to serving the community, was unmatched.

As we remember Bill Custers, we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. His wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as all those who had the privilege of knowing him, will continue to cherish the memories of a man who dedicated his life to serving others through the power of television. Rest in peace, Bill Custers.
